Two things I appreciate my dad teaching us about baseball when we were growing up were, 'always play by the rules' and 'keep your eye on the ball.' It makes for a fair and fun game. We always played by official baseball rules.
One of the games I will always remember took place when I was about 12 years old. We were in the middle of a pick-up game when my dad came up to bat; he would usually bat left handed so the boys had a fair chance. I was already on first base and had taken a stance to try and steal second when I heard the crack of the bat. Just as I looked toward home plate I could see the ball making a beeline toward me. I froze and the ball caught my in the ribs. The next thing I knew my father was trying to unbend me from a fetal position, the whole time yelling at me, "Breathe!" Needless to say, for weeks I wore the outline of baseball stitching on my bruised ribs. The next time we played my dad asked we what I had learned from this experience. "Keep my eye on the ball." I answered.
I have learned from this experience and from many other baseball games that if I keep my eye on the ball I can hit just about anything thrown at me. The hit may not count for anything but at least I can hit it.
I think it is the same with anything in life, especially our relationship with God. If we keep our eye on Him we can hit any curve ball that life throws at us. And for that I would like to thank my Fathers, Heavenly and Earthly.
